About Owen Sound’s Grey Granite Club
A Tribute to the Historic Grey Granite Club in Owen Sound
Though structural engineering issues and a major building crack forced the historic Grey Granite Club in Owen Sound, Ontario, to officially close and sell its property in late 2012, its 137-year history remains a legendary chapter in Canadian sports heritage. Established shortly after the end of the U.S. Civil War in 1875, the club was one of the oldest curling organizations in the country.
Operating out of its historic 2nd Avenue East building built in 1913, the club hosted decades of active play, transitioning from natural ice to a four-sheet artificial ice surface in 1950. The club was famous in Grey County for its historic contributions, surviving a devastating fire in 1972 that destroyed 100 pairs of imported Scottish curling stones, and serving as a vital community hub. While the rink component was torn down in 2015, the memories, sportsmanship, and pioneer spirit of the Grey Granite Club will always be celebrated.
