About Harriston Curling Club
Harriston Curling Club: A Landmark of Canadian Sports Heritage
With a rich history tracing back to 1875 when games were first played on frozen ponds, the Harriston Curling Club on George Street South is celebrating an incredible milestone of local winter sports. The club transitioned from a shared skating arena into its current dedicated, modern four-sheet facility in 1976, continuously expanding to meet the needs of its active community.
The club is globally famous in the curling community for hosting ‘The Meiklejohn’—a legendary tournament established in 1912. Teams originally arrived by train, bringing their own stones to compete for a magnificent three-foot-tall sterling silver trophy. Today, ‘The Meiklejohn’ maintains several old traditions, including opening ceremonies led by a bagpiper, and remains one of the oldest played bonspiels in Canada.
