Telluride Curling Club: A Decade of Stones in a Box Canyon
Telluride Curling Club brings curling to Telluride, the former mining town in a box canyon of Colorado’s San Juan Mountains that is better known for its ski slopes. The club was started by Megan and J.D. Wise, who discovered the sport during the 2010 Winter Olympics while living in Arizona and learned to play from Canadian snowbirds in Phoenix. After moving to Telluride in 2013, they founded the club and acquired its first two sets of stones on a lease-to-own deal from the Denver Curling Club.
The club curls on arena ice, with two sheets marked out at the Hanley Ice Rink in Town Park. Fall and winter league play runs on Monday nights from 8:45 to 10:45 p.m. for curlers 18 and over, with a Thursday morning league starting in January, and a youth program alongside. About 80 league members take part each season, on teams with names like the Sweeping Beauties, the Telluride Stoners and Sweep Caroline, and annual learn-to-curl clinics have brought hundreds of beginners onto the ice.
In March 2025 the club celebrated its tenth anniversary with a free party at the Mountain Village rink. Telluride is a member of USA Curling’s Mid-America region.
