The event and what is at stake

The 2027 New Holland Canadian Under-20 Curling Championships bring the country’s best junior curlers to Rivière-du-Loup, Quebec, from March 20 to 27, 2027. Curling Canada runs the event, and it is the national junior title in both the men’s and women’s divisions. Alberta has won the most titles: 18 on the men’s side and 12 on the women’s side. Saskatchewan is next with 14 men’s and 11 women’s.

Last year’s champions, in Sudbury, were Ontario’s Evan MacDougall and Quebec’s Jolianne Fortin. They earned the right to represent Canada at the 2027 World Junior Championships, set for Aberdeen, Scotland, on February 6–14, 2027. Whether the 2027 winners get a world-championship berth, and any prize-money details, will be announced later.

Format and field

Curling Canada expects 36 teams, 18 men’s and 18 women’s, from every province and territory. Local reports put the number of athletes at 144 and say each region will send at least one men’s and one women’s team. Four of the teams will come from Quebec.

Recent editions split each gender into two pools of nine. The top three from each pool moved on to the playoffs. In recent years, extra berths went to certain provinces on the strength of earlier results, and the 2027 allocation has not been announced. The qualifying events are still ahead: Quebec’s U20 provincial championship, for instance, starts on January 21, 2027.

  • Defending champions (2026): Evan MacDougall (Ontario) and Jolianne Fortin (Quebec)
  • Confirmed 2027 teams: none yet. Rosters will be known once the provincial and territorial playdowns finish.

Host city and venue

The games will be played at the Stade de la Cité des Jeunes and at the Centre de curling Prelco, home of Curling Rivière-du-Loup. The Stade is a recently renovated two-sheet arena that hosted the Quebec Games in 2023. Prelco opened in 2018. Seating capacity has not been published.

This is the first Canadian curling championship in the city. It is the third Quebec city to stage this national junior event. The club has hosted the 2020 Quebec under-21 provincial championships and is a yearly stop on the double-mixed circuit. The organizing committee’s co-chair is Peter Burgess, the 2023 Canadian senior champion and 2024 world senior champion. Mayor Mario Bastille has said the city is ready to welcome athletes from across the country.

Rivière-du-Loup is in the Bas-Saint-Laurent region. Local organizers expect between 1,500 and 2,000 rental units to be booked over the ten days of the event. Fans who plan to attend should look for accommodation early.
