A new era for the men’s worlds

The BKT World Men’s Curling Championship 2027 in Saint John, New Brunswick, marks a turning point for the sport’s top international men’s event. It is the first men’s world championship played with an expanded 18-team field, part of a wider restructuring of World Curling’s competition calendar. The prize is the world title, and with promotion and relegation now built into the system, the bottom of the standings matters too: the lowest-placed nations drop to the B-Division for the following season.

Sweden arrive as defending champions. Niklas Edin’s rink beat Canada’s Matt Dunstone 9-6 in the 2026 final in Ogden, Utah, giving Edin a record eighth world title, while Scotland’s Ross Whyte took bronze ahead of John Shuster of the United States.

Format and field

The 18 nations are split into two groups of nine, each playing a full round robin. The group winners go straight to the semifinals, while the second- and third-placed teams meet in crossover qualification games (A2 against B3, A3 against B2) for the remaining two semifinal places. The two bottom teams in each group are relegated.

Most of the field is built on the 2026 results, with the 14 highest-ranked nations from Ogden keeping their places and the remaining spots going to teams promoted through the new qualification tier. Canada’s berth is secure, and its representative will be the champion of the 2027 Montana’s Brier, the 100th edition of the national men’s championship, played in Saskatoon in March. The complete list of teams will be confirmed once qualification is finished.

Host city and venue

Games are played at TD Station, the downtown arena that is home to the Saint John Sea Dogs junior hockey team and seats about 6,300 for hockey. Saint John knows how to stage a world championship: it co-hosted the combined men’s and women’s worlds in 1999 and welcomed the world women’s event in 2014. Its national curling history stretches back to the 1947 Brier, along with the 1963 Canadian women’s championship and Canadian Mixed events in 1971 and 1983. This will also be the fifth straight world championship in Canada to carry BKT title sponsorship.

Visiting fans will find a historic port city on the Bay of Fundy, with the arena within walking distance of the uptown’s restaurants, pubs and hotels.
