What the event is and what is at stake

The Five-and-Under National Championship is USA Curling’s grassroots national title for adult curlers with five years of experience or less. USA Curling first hosted it in 2021. The 2027 edition runs May 4-9 at CurlVegas in Las Vegas. The field is open to players of every ability, including stick and wheelchair curlers.

The winners will be the first to lift the newly named Peskoff-Palazzoli Trophy. It honours Bill Peskoff and Dave Palazzoli and will be awarded for the first time in Las Vegas. The Duluth Curling Club originally donated the trophy, and that gift remains recognised on it. Prize money and any further benefits for the champions have not been announced.

Format and field

The Open-format event has 24 teams. Qualifying bonspiels award 23 berths, and the host club receives one entry. The qualifiers are bonspiels for curlers over 21 with five years or less in the sport. The 2026-27 list begins with the women’s Tahoe Tessie on September 25, 2026, and continues through to events in early April 2027.

Eligibility is changing for 2027. A year of experience now means 15 or more games between June 1 and May 31. Some teams win more than one qualifier, so a Fill Policy awards the spare berths. USA Curling plans to use it to boost women’s representation.

Defending champions: Team Kunkel (Jeff Kunkel, Woody Wu, Kenny Duncan, Matt O’Brien and Hal Brown, coached by Jeff Baird) won the 2026 title in Seattle. They went unbeaten in pool play and beat Team Gilbert 9-6 in the final. The 2027 field is not yet set, because qualifying runs through the winter and spring. Confirmed teams will be announced as berths are decided.

Host city and venue

CurlVegas is a non-profit club with four sheets of curling ice, a lounge and a patio, at 3525 E. Post Road, Suite 110. The club opened in 2024. The ice house is kept at about 40 degrees. A seating capacity has not been published.

The club has already hosted a national event. The 2025 Arena National Championships there drew 24 teams. Las Vegas also staged the Continental Cup at The Orleans in 2014. USA Curling chief executive Dean Gemmell said Las Vegas has plenty of members who are new to curling.

For travelling fans, the facility is about six minutes from Harry Reid International Airport and twelve minutes from the Las Vegas Strip.

Tickets

Ticket details for the 2027 Five-and-Under Nationals have not been announced. Session tickets and passes will be announced closer to the event. USA Curling has already put tickets on sale for its January 2027 Men’s and Women’s Nationals, but that is a separate championship.
