Coastal Carolina Curling Club: Summer Curling on the Carolina Coast

Coastal Carolina Curling Club has been bringing curling to southeastern North Carolina since 2011. The club plays on arena ice at the Wilmington Ice House, where it shares the rink with hockey and skating programs, and before every session members pebble the hockey surface with specialized equipment to turn it into curling ice.

Because of the rink schedule, the club curls largely in spring and summer, the reverse of curling’s traditional winter season. Olympic years bring a rush of interest: a Learn to Curl event in February 2018 drew about 70 people to the Ice House, many of them inspired by the Winter Games on television. Members value the social side of the sport, gathering with their opponents after games.

As one of three curling clubs in North Carolina and the only one without its own ice, the club has set its sights on a dedicated facility. It purchased property in Leland, across the Cape Fear River in Brunswick County, and by early 2022 had raised about half of a $150,000 construction goal for curling-only ice that would allow year-round programming.
