Coyotes Curling Club: Arizona’s First Dedicated Curling Ice

The Coyotes Curling Club proved that curling can thrive in the desert. Six Canadian expats founded the club in 2003, inspired by the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, and early skeptics were plentiful. The club first played at the Scottsdale Ice Den, growing from six members to sixty, and taught thousands of Valley residents to curl before opening Arizona’s first dedicated curling facility in Tempe in early 2014.

Home is a converted warehouse on West Medtronic Way that once manufactured the fuzz for tennis balls, now fitted with four sheets of curling ice. Membership rose sharply after the move, and the share of non-Canadian members grew to roughly 60 percent. The club is not affiliated with the former NHL team of the same name.

The league lineup runs from social to serious: Tuesday Social, Friday TGIF and Sunday Sweep & Eat on one end, Wednesday open mixed doubles and a Thursday open in the middle, and the competitive Monday Champions League at the top. Learn-to-curl skills series, adaptive curling, youth and corporate programs round it out, and the bonspiel calendar includes the Golden Wrench Classic. Tempe has also hosted elite events featuring top international teams.
