About Lake Placid Curling Club
Lake Placid Curling Club: Keeping Curling Alive in the Tri-Lakes
Lake Placid Curling Club was founded in 1981 and carries on one of the oldest winter traditions of New York’s Tri-Lakes region. Since 2013 the club has made its home at the Saranac Lake Civic Center, where it curls on arena ice. Curling in Saranac Lake dates to around 1897, when the Pontiac Bay and Pines curling clubs were formed; they later merged into the Saranac Lake Curling Club, which built an indoor rink in 1918 and a four-sheet house with a striking Lamella roof in 1931 before closing in 1943 under wartime economics.
The Civic Center stepped onto the world stage in January 2023, when it hosted the curling events of the FISU World University Games, with 13 delegations playing every day for eleven days. The club also keeps the game in front of the public at the Saranac Lake Winter Carnival, where curling returned in 2005; at the 2026 carnival it ran its “Hit the Button” competition out on frozen Lake Flower, inviting visitors to try a draw to the button or a take-out. Lake Placid Curling Club is a member of the Grand National Curling Club.
