Lone Star Curling Club: Austin’s Curlers Find Dedicated Ice
Lone Star Curling Club has been organizing curling in Austin since 2006. For its first fifteen years the club leased ice time at rinks around the city, building its membership mostly with Texans who had never seen the game up close. Texas curling has since made a mark nationally, with teams from Dallas-Fort Worth and Houston winning U.S. Arena National Championship titles.
In September 2021 the club gained a permanent home when Curl Austin opened as the first dedicated curling ice in Texas, a four-sheet facility built to Olympic specifications in North Austin, next door to Austin Beerworks and near Austin FC’s Q2 Stadium. The center was created by David Gersenson, originally from northern Michigan, with private investors, while Lone Star Curling Club runs the leagues and tournaments. Tuesday-night league play brings around 30 curlers across all four sheets, with weekend learn-to-curl classes and private and corporate events filling out the schedule.
