Long Island Curling Club: From Five Members to a Dedicated-Ice Dream

Long Island Curling Club was founded in 2008 by just five curlers and has grown into the curling home of Nassau and Suffolk counties, with close to 200 members by 2018. A volunteer-run nonprofit, it earned 501(c)(3) public charity status in 2014 and is a member of USA Curling and the Grand National Curling Club.

The club moved through Newbridge Arena and Long Beach Arena before settling in 2015 at the Long Island Sports Hub in Syosset, where it curls on arena ice and is the only year-round indoor curling program on geographic Long Island. The schedule includes recreational leagues for all levels, skills clinics, bonspiels, social events, and public, corporate and private Learn to Curl sessions.

Demand keeps outrunning ice time. After the 2026 Winter Olympics, learn-to-curl clinics sold out and president John Paccione said the club could not get enough ice to keep up. Since 2018 a steering committee has worked toward the club’s own dedicated facility, starting with two sheets in leased warehouse space and growing to four or more.
