About Petersham Curling Club
Petersham Curling Club: A Mill Town’s Curling House Since 1960
Petersham Curling Club is the curling home of Petersham, a small town in north-central Massachusetts, and draws members from across the state and upper New England. It was founded in 1960 by employees of the Union Twist Drill Company in nearby Athol, led by company president Stanley L. Holland, an experienced curler from Rock Island, Quebec. The club bought its land from the Petersham Country Club on July 1, 1960, broke ground on July 24 and built its clubhouse for $50,000, modeled on the Border Curling Club in Stanstead, Quebec, which remains its sister club.
The volunteer-run club curls on two sheets of dedicated ice, one of only four dedicated curling clubs operating in Massachusetts. Its season runs from October through April with a full week of leagues: daytime and evening opens, men’s and women’s leagues, a Wednesday signature league, doubles on Thursday evenings and Sunday mornings, a Sunday social development league and Saturday morning juniors. Learn-to-curl classes are open to ages 7 and up.
Bonspiels include the Golf and Curl Biathlon each October, Shays’ Open Doubles, a youth bonspiel, the Bay State Ladies, the mixed Spring Fling and the Cornhole and Curl. The club is a member of the Grand National Curling Club.
