Windy City Curling Club: DuPage County’s Dedicated Curling Center

Windy City Curling Club serves curlers in Chicago’s western suburbs. Founded by Matt Galas, the club played its first league games in April 2014 and spent its early years renting hockey rinks around the region, curling on arena ice wherever it could find a slot.

In 2019 the club opened the Windy City Curling Center on Roosevelt Road in Villa Park, a former Illinois state health services office in a shopping center that was gutted and rebuilt from scratch. It remains the only curling center in DuPage County. The center opened officially on June 20, 2019, with three sheets of dedicated ice, locker rooms and a bar, and a month later hosted its first bonspiel, a 32-team event attended by Olympic gold medalist Tyler George.

The season runs from mid-September through late May, unusually long for a Midwest club. Windy City runs open leagues, a rookie league, learn-to-curl sessions including Olympic open houses, and corporate team-building events, and as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit it works to develop youth and adult curlers toward competition. The club belongs to USA Curling, the Midwest Curling Association and the U.S. Women’s Curling Association.
