Rocket City Curling Club: Alabama’s First Curling Club Gets Its Own Ice

Rocket City Curling Club brought curling to the Heart of Dixie when it was founded in Huntsville in 2018 as the first curling club in Alabama. Organized as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, the club set out to grow the sport across North Alabama and the Tennessee Valley, and it has done so quickly: by 2026 it counted more than 150 members, making it one of the larger curling clubs in the country and earning Huntsville the nickname “the Curling Capital of Alabama.”

The club curls on arena ice at the Huntsville Ice Sports Center, where it runs weekly leagues and public Learn to Curl sessions. Its bonspiel calendar carries a distinctly Rocket City flavor, with events such as the Space Race, the DragonSpiel and the Rock-It City Bonspiel. Club members have also traveled to national competition, including the 5U National Championships in Minnesota.

The biggest chapter is still ahead. The City of Huntsville broke ground in 2025 on a $44.6 million expansion of the Ice Sports Center that adds a second ice sheet with five dedicated curling sheets, expected to open in early 2027 and give the club the purpose-built ice it has long been working toward.
