Leelanau Curling Club: Dedicated Ice in an Old Maple City Schoolhouse
Leelanau Curling Club is the curling home of Maple City, a village in Michigan’s Leelanau County west of Traverse City. The club opened in 2019 in a nearly century-old former village schoolhouse on West Burdickville Road, a building that closed as a school in the early 1960s. It shares the building with Broomstack Kitchen & Taphouse, which opened on February 1, 2019, and takes its name from broomstacking, the curling custom of socializing with teammates and opponents after a game.
The club is the project of David Gersenson, who styles himself the club’s commissioner. He discovered curling in 2016 through the founder of the Traverse City Curling Club and put much of his personal savings into building the facility. The ice is dedicated curling ice, never shared with skaters or hockey, measuring 147 by 32 feet with room for two lanes of play. Classes, leagues and events run through the year for curlers from kids to seniors, with the taphouse’s burgers, Sicilian-style pizza and Michigan craft beers next to the ice.
