About Lewiston Curling Club
Lewiston Curling Club: Six Decades on the Same Northern Michigan Ice
Lewiston Curling Club has been curling on the same piece of land in this northern Lower Peninsula village since the early 1960s, about 30 minutes southeast of Gaylord and a block from downtown. In the early days members played outdoors, through snow and puddles. Today the club has a fully insulated two-sheet curling house with a viewing area, changing rooms and a full kitchen; the building has been re-sided in knotty pine, and a new internet and TV system lets the club livestream games on YouTube.
Membership stands around 70, with curlers driving in from Indian River, Petoskey, Traverse City, Alpena, Gaylord, Manistee and beyond. The post-pandemic season of 2022 brought 21 new members, and nine more joined in 2023, a wave president Tyler Smith partly credits to John Shuster’s 2018 Olympic gold. Competitive leagues run Monday through Thursday with 16 curlers a night, and the club rents its ice to groups, with members providing full instruction and equipment.
