Pawcatuck River Curling Club: Reviving a Century of Westerly Curling
Pawcatuck River Curling Club has brought curling back to Westerly, a town where the sport was played for a hundred years, from 1896 to 1996. Founded in 2023, the club draws members from both sides of the Pawcatuck River, southern Rhode Island and southeastern Connecticut.
Its home is the Washington Trust Community Skating Center on Main Street in downtown Westerly, a seasonal outdoor rink of 100 by 120 feet that operates from late November through March. Curling takes place on Tuesday evenings, and the club’s Learn to Curl Tuesday clinics have turned plenty of curious skaters into regular players. Play here uses a truncated 73-foot sheet.
Each February the club hosts the Battle of the Bird’s Nest, a morning tournament that brings in teams from clubs around Rhode Island and Massachusetts; in 2026 the hosts’ “Fighting Plovers” won the consolation match. The club also finished second at the Bay State Games.
