About Calumet Curling Club
Calumet Curling Club: Over 70 Years of Family-Style Curling
Situated in Ponoka County between Ponoka and Bashaw, the Calumet Curling Club is an intimate, completely volunteer-run two-sheet curling rink. Built in 1953 for just $1,905 with the help of 45 community members who donated $25 each, league play officially commenced on January 2, 1954, with Helge Olson throwing the historic first rock.
The club has continuously modernized while preserving its grassroots charm, adding an artificial ice plant and cozy lobby in 1985, and recently installing cameras at both ends of the sheets so spectators can watch rocks make their way to the button. Demonstrating the community’s extraordinary loyalty, the club’s directors won a record-breaking $20,950 provincial 50/50 draw in 2021 and immediately donated 100% of the jackpot back to the rink to ensure its financial survival.
