A Tribute to the Historic Churchill Curling Club in Innisfil
Though the Churchill Curling Club in Innisfil, Ontario, permanently closed its doors in 2017 due to rising utility costs and aging equipment, its incredible 140-year history remains a legendary chapter in Simcoe County’s sports heritage. The club’s roots trace back to January 8, 1878, when Scottish immigrant John Lennox introduced the game to locals on a frozen mill pond.
By 1880, members felled trees from their own properties to construct a covered rink. After surviving roof collapses and a complete community-led rebuild in 1975, the small white building on Yonge Street served as a vital winter social and public skating hub. While the physical sheets are gone, the spirit of camaraderie and pioneer grit that defined Churchill on ice will never be forgotten.
