Canwood Curling Club: Keeping the Sport Alive Against All Odds
For decades, the Canwood Curling Club on Main Street was the heart of winter social activity in the Village of Canwood, Saskatchewan. Tragically, on January 4, 2021, an extreme accumulation of heavy snow caused a complete structural collapse of the roof over the facility’s three ice sheets. After structural engineers determined that rebuilding a permanent facility was not economically feasible, the village council and club made the difficult decision to demolish the building in 2022, donating the remaining ice plant to help rebuild the fire-damaged Shell Lake rink.
Despite losing their physical building, the spirit of Canwood curling remains incredibly strong. Under the leadership of club president Grant Person, the community continues to curl once a week on natural ice at the Canwood Memorial Arena. They still host their highly popular annual ‘Natural Arena Ice Championship Bonspiel’, proving that community connection and a love for the sport do not require a luxury facility.
