The event and what is at stake

The NWT Mixed Territorial Championship decides which rink carries the Northwest Territories’ colours in mixed curling, where each four-player team has two women and two men. It runs from March 17 to 22, 2027, in Hay River. The last edition with a published result, in 2025, sent the winner to the Canadian Mixed Curling Championship in Assiniboia, Sask., in November. The national title is worth more than local pride: the 2025 Canadian champion, New Brunswick’s Rene Comeau, earned the right to represent Canada at the 2026 World Mixed Curling Championship. Whether the 2027 winner has a national berth, and any prize money, will be announced by the territorial association.

Format and field

Entries for the 2027 championship have not been announced, so the number of teams and the format are still to come. Recent history suggests a small, local field. In 2025 three teams registered, all from Hay River, for a double round-robin with the top two advancing. One team withdrew after the first draw because of injuries, and the event became a best-of-five between the remaining two.

The most recent champions I can confirm are the 2025 winners. Betti Delorey’s Hay River rink, with D’arcy Delorey, Halli-Rae Delorey and Glenn Smith, beat Wyatt Scheller’s team 6-5 in the deciding game on home ice. Confirmed teams for 2027 will be announced closer to the event.

Host city and venue

Games are set for Hay River, a regular host of territorial curling. The town’s curling club has staged the 2025 men’s championship, the 2024 women’s championship and the 2025 mixed event. A seating capacity has not been published.

For visitors, Hay River is known as the “Hub of the North” and is the second-largest community in the territory. It sits on the south shore of Great Slave Lake, just north of the NWT-Alberta border, and is linked by highway to Grimshaw, Alberta. The town has a population of almost 4,000 and a number of hotels and B&Bs. Visitors in March can also catch the K’amba Carnival at K’atl’odeeche First Nation, with hand games, crafts and dogsled races.

Tickets

Ticketing details have not been announced. Territorial championships at Hay River are small, club-based events, and no ticket packages or sales dates have been published for 2027. Information on admission will be released ahead of the March dates.
