The road to the wheelchair worlds

The World Wheelchair-B Curling Championship 2026 runs from November 22 to 30, 2026, in Lohja, Finland. It is World Curling’s open-entry qualifying event for wheelchair curling nations that have not already secured a place at the World Wheelchair Curling Championship 2027. The stakes are simple and significant: the top three teams earn promotion to the 2027 world championship, which will also be played in Lohja from February 20 to 27, 2027.

Format and field

Entry is open to World Curling member associations without a guaranteed world championship berth, so the final list of teams will be confirmed by World Curling closer to the event. The most recent edition, in November 2024, drew 11 teams and was decided by a round robin followed by semifinals and medal games. That year the United States beat Japan 9-4 for gold and England edged Czechia 7-6 for bronze, and all three medallists moved up to the 2025 World Wheelchair Championship in Stevenston, Scotland, where China won the title.

Host city and venue

The championship is played at Kisakallio Campus, the Olympic and Paralympic Training Center of the Sports Institute of Three Campuses. Lohja has become the regular home of the wheelchair B-Division, staging the event in 2019, 2020, 2022, 2023 and 2024, and the local organisers’ partnership with World Curling now stretches back more than 15 years.

The 2026-27 season is the busiest yet for the venue. After the Wheelchair-B event, Kisakallio hosts the World Junior-B Championships in December, the World Mixed Doubles Championship in January, the World Wheelchair Championship in February and the World Wheelchair Mixed Doubles Championship in early March, five World Curling events in one season. Organisers have highlighted the environmental benefit of running several championships on the same ice. Lohja is a lakeside town in southern Finland, within easy reach of Helsinki for international visitors.
