About Historic Legacy and Bitter Closure of Juan de Fuca Curling Club
A Tribute to the Historic Juan de Fuca Curling Club in Colwood
Though the Juan de Fuca Curling Club in Colwood (Greater Victoria), British Columbia, officially closed its physical doors in March 2019 after West Shore Parks and Recreation permanently repurposed the ice sheets to make more daycare and dryland fitness space, its 44-year legacy remains legendary. First opened in 1975, the 520-member club was the heartbeat of West Shore sports.
The club holds an esteemed place in global sports history, serving as the home base for Julie Sutton’s legendary rink (including Melissa Soligo, Jodie Sutton, and Karrie Wilms) which captured Canadian Gold in 1991, World Silver in 1991, and an Olympic Bronze Medal at the 1992 Winter Games. While the Capital region lost a major athletic venue, the competitive drive and pioneer spirit of Juan de Fuca will never be forgotten.
