About Alpine Curling Club
Alpine Curling Club: Six Decades of Bonspiels in Monroe, Wisconsin
Alpine Curling Club is the curling home of Monroe, the Green County seat in south-central Wisconsin. The club plays in its own dedicated two-sheet building on 31st Avenue on the city’s far east side, and in January 2024 it celebrated its 60th anniversary.
Bonspiels are central to life at Alpine. The club hosts two each season, a men’s bonspiel in December and a mixed bonspiel in January; the 56th annual event in January 2024 brought 12 teams from Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois and Missouri, and was won by a last-minute co-ed team dubbed the All Stars. Alpine has also hosted the Wisconsin Region Mixed Playdowns, the qualifying step toward the U.S. national championships, drawing teams from La Crosse, Madison and Janesville.
Youth curling has deep roots in Monroe: Monroe High School teams won a state title in the 1980s, and a junior program was formally re-established in August 2017 under coaches John Bazley and Joseph Ehle, growing quickly with players from age eight up. Today Alpine runs a junior league for curlers under 18, free learn-to-curl events twice a year in partnership with Monroe Parks and Recreation, four-week instructional classes, and leagues that crown champions each season.
