About Exmoor Country Club Curling

Exmoor Country Club: North Shore Curling Since the 1930s

Curling at Exmoor Country Club in Highland Park, on Chicago’s North Shore, dates back to the late 1930s. The private club, better known for its 1915 Donald Ross golf course, curls on four sheets of dedicated ice in its Oakhouse, complete with spectator seating and a bar. Several North Shore private clubs built curling facilities in the 1950s, and Exmoor’s is the only indoor rink among them still in operation.

The program has produced some of the biggest names in American curling. Ann Swisshelm, a two-time national champion (2001, 2003), represented the United States at the 2002 Salt Lake City and 2014 Sochi Olympics. Ann Brown and Georgia West both served as president of the U.S. Curling Association, and Brown’s name lives on in a sportsmanship award.

Exmoor regularly hosts national and international competition; in March 2022 it staged the USA Curling Senior Men’s National Championship. The club also runs competitive youth curling from age five alongside its recreational play for members.
