Midland Curling Club: From Outdoor Sheets to a Four-Sheet Center

Midland Curling Club was founded in 1962 by eleven members who curled on outdoor sheets in this mid-Michigan city. For more than four decades the club made do with the weather, until a $5.1 million fundraising campaign, backed largely by local foundations including the Alden and Vada Dow Family Foundation and the Dow Chemical Company Foundation, produced a purpose-built home. The 16,000-square-foot Midland Curling Center on South Jefferson Avenue opened on October 31, 2008, with four sheets of dedicated curling ice, operated as part of Greater Midland.

The new building transformed the club, which grew from about 80 members to around 240 after the move. Leagues run nearly every day of the week, and volunteer members staff public rentals and teach first-timers. Andy’s League, held on Saturdays from November through March, offers adaptive curling for people with developmental or physical disabilities, using wheelchair-curling rules without sweepers.

The center has also become a host for national competition: from March 6 to 9, 2025, Midland staged the USA College Curling Championships, with sixteen college teams competing for the national title.
