Mid-Michigan Curling Club: Lansing’s Curlers Take a New Name
Mid-Michigan Curling Club is the new name of the Lansing Curling Club, founded in 2010 to spread the game across the greater Lansing area. The club curls on arena ice: volunteers set up the rings, hacks and the rest of the equipment on hockey rinks, and for several seasons the club made its home at Suburban Ice in East Lansing. Its current home is the Optimist Ice Arena on West North Street in Jackson, and the new name reflects a reach that now goes well beyond the capital city.
Like many U.S. clubs, it grew sharply after Team Shuster’s gold-medal run at the 2018 Olympics; president Mitch Raeck was one of the curlers who joined in that wave. Learn to Curl sessions, taught by USA Curling-trained instructors over about 90 minutes, cover sliding out of the hack and delivering stones, and adaptive equipment is available for curlers with limited mobility. Graduates move straight into league play, with a Sunday league running through the spring.
