About Racine Curling Club
Racine Curling Club: From Root River Ice to Melvin Avenue
Racine Curling Club was founded on March 2, 1954, with 28 charter members and Judge J. Allan Simpson Sr. as its first president. In its early years the club curled wherever the ice would hold, on outdoor sheets at Horlick Field, the Root River, Hatter’s Sand Pit and Armstrong Park. The move indoors came on February 26, 1966, when Scottish pipers in kilts led the grand opening of the club’s own building on Melvin Avenue.
The two-sheet dedicated facility, about 15 minutes east of I-94, now serves more than 160 adult and youth curlers from southeastern Wisconsin and northern Illinois. Leagues run seven days a week for every skill level, and the club offers Learn to Curl sessions, junior curling, group rentals and competitive bonspiels, including men’s and mixed invitationals.
Racine is affiliated with USA Curling, the U.S. Women’s Curling Association, the Wisconsin State Curling Association and the Badger Women’s Curling Association.
