About Canadian Club of Boston
Canadian Club of Boston: A Century-Old Social Club With Curling Roots
The Canadian Club of Boston was formally organized in 1905 as a social club for Canadians living in the Boston area, with roots reaching back before the turn of the twentieth century. Curling took hold among its members around 1960, when the club began renting ice at the Brae Burn Country Club in Newton, and it joined the Grand National Curling Club in 1961-62. When Brae Burn closed its curling ice, the club found a new home at The Country Club in Brookline, whose grounds lie in the Chestnut Hill neighborhood.
Without a rink of its own, the Canadian Club is counted as a “paper” club, but its curling section has stayed a lively part of the New England scene. It numbered about 45 members in 2011, roughly 30 percent of them women, and it is a member of both the Grand National Curling Club and the United States Women’s Curling Association. That year it served as one of the host clubs for a touring Scottish women’s team on the Cape Cod leg of their visit, and Canadian Club teams continue to enter New England bonspiels, among them the Cape Cod Curling Club’s men’s Summerspiel.
