Triangle Curling Club: The Southeast’s First Dedicated Curling Ice

Triangle Curling Club serves curlers across North Carolina’s Research Triangle of Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill. Founded in 1995, the club spent two decades without a building of its own, including eight years at the Polar Ice House in Wake Forest, before building a home of its own in southeast Durham. The privately financed, roughly $1.5 million building on So-Hi Drive took three years to complete and opened in April 2015 with a 34-team bonspiel, the first dedicated curling facility in the Southeastern United States.

The 14,500-square-foot club has four sheets of dedicated ice, a heated lounge with a kitchen and bar, and is run entirely by volunteers as a nonprofit, with members handling everything from ice maintenance to bartending. Membership has grown from around 80 when the building opened to about 400, many of them Canadian transplants. Leagues run through the season alongside learn-to-curl sessions, college programs and more than 100 corporate rentals a year.

Juniors aged 5 to 21 play a Sunday afternoon recreational program led by Derek Corbett, a former U.S. World Junior Championships team member, and each January the club hosts the Triangle Junior Bonspiel. Triangle is a member of USA Curling, the Grand National Curling Club and the U.S. Women’s Curling Association.
