Charlotte Curling Association: Dedicated Ice in the Carolinas

Charlotte Curling Association was founded in 2010, during the Vancouver Winter Olympics, with just 25 members. For its first seasons the club rented one night a week at the Xtreme Ice Center in Indian Trail, holding its final tournament there in August 2014. That November it opened a purpose-built, 12,000-square-foot curling facility on Old Statesville Road in north Charlotte, a $1.7 million project that let members curl every day of the week. The club plays on four sheets of dedicated ice.

Membership has since passed 200, from first-season beginners to curlers with more than 50 years in the sport. Adult and senior leagues fill the week, juniors start at age six, and adaptive and wheelchair curling takes the ice on Thursday mornings. Learn to Curl sessions and Cocktails and Curling nights introduce newcomers to the game.

Charlotte’s bonspiels draw teams from across the United States and Canada, and the club runs curling camps with Olympic-caliber instructors. Four-time Olympian Debbie McCormick has taken part in club events.
