Thunder Bay Curling Club: Bringing Curling to Alpena, Michigan
Thunder Bay Curling Club is the curling club of Alpena, the harbor city on Lake Huron’s Thunder Bay in northeast Michigan. The club was founded in 2019 by Mike Wojda, who took up the game after his son introduced him to it; his wife soon followed, and the family set out to bring the sport to their hometown. The club curls on arena ice at Alpena’s Northern Lights Arena.
Curling in Alpena began with a mini-season of four Sundays in December, with lessons run in partnership with the Detroit Curling Club, and individuals as well as full teams were welcome. The club has since grown into regular league play, preparing for its fourth league season in 2023 with games in the early evening. Members describe the people as the best part of the game – a sport that brings the community together.
