Hi-Line Curling Club: Hammers and Hacks on Montana’s Hi-Line

Hi-Line Curling Club has been curling in Havre, the main town on Montana’s northern Hi-Line, since about 2008. The club plays on arena ice at the Havre Ice Dome, sharing the building with hockey, which for years limited curling to a few days a month. Club members describe the game as a welcome reason to get out of the house during long, harsh prairie winters.

The club has grown steadily. It counted 12 to 14 league teams around 2019 and reached a record 17 teams in league play by 2022. Its signature event is the Hammers and Hacks Bonspiel, which reached its 12th edition in March 2022 with 22 teams from North Dakota, Saskatchewan, Whitefish, Bozeman and Havre. Local Vizsla Brewing even brewed a Hammers and Hacks Helles Lager to help fund the club.

Under president Carl Little, the club runs free open-curl sessions each fall, with equipment provided, before the league season begins.
