About Celanese Curling Club
Club Sportif Celanese: One of Quebec’s Oldest Curling Treasures
Established in 1935 inside the historic Carré Celanese neighborhood of Drummondville, Quebec, the Club Sportif Celanese is a beloved symbol of regional athletic heritage. Founded by Rockfort Henry Sperling, the manager of the local Canadian Celanese factory, to foster fitness and community among workers, the club originally constructed its two sheets of curling ice for just $2,100.
The club has survived many extraordinary historical challenges—including the tragic sinking of their first shipment of imported Scottish curling stones during WWII. Following the closure of the local factory, the club successfully transitioned into a member-run cooperative. Today, it operates as a warm bilingual venue, offering winter curling on two well-kept sheets, summer tennis, social card leagues, and private rental halls.
