About Govan Curling Club
A Tribute to the Historic Govan Curling Club
Though changing demographics in rural Saskatchewan forced the Govan Curling Club to officially close its physical doors in March 2018, its magnificent history remains a legendary chapter in Canadian sports heritage. In 1957, this small town of only a few hundred people undertook the massive challenge of installing artificial ice in their newly built rink—becoming the first small town in the world to do so.
For over 60 years, Govan was a legendary cradle of provincial champions, producing elite athletes like Don Dabrowski, Ian Kelln, and Gordon Fritzler. Backed by legendary ice-makers like Fred Puffer and dedicated local volunteers, Govan Curling Club represents the absolute pinnacle of pioneer spirit, volunteer grit, and a lifelong passion for curling.
