Nantucket Curling Club: Island Curling 30 Miles Out to Sea

Nantucket Curling Club brings curling to the island of Nantucket, Massachusetts, playing on the arena ice of Nantucket Ice on Backus Lane. The club was formed in January 2016 to introduce island residents and visitors to a new kind of arena activity. It grew out of an earlier push: local curler Heather Sheldon and Cape Cod curler Russ Lemcke had tried to start a league around 2010, and the idea finally took hold when Nantucket Ice board president Devin Remick joined Lemcke to launch the club, with Wednesday-night summer games and stones and brooms supplied for players who had never curled before.

Since then the club has introduced islanders to the sport through beginner courses run with Nantucket Community School – four-week sessions covering delivery, sweeping, strategy and etiquette, with stick curling for those who cannot slide from the hack. Saturday Night Curling sessions and free introductory events keep the ice busy in winter, and in 2026 the club opened registration for its Bay State Winter Games Bonspiel.
