Brooklyn Lakeside Curling Club: Curling Returns to Prospect Park

Brooklyn Lakeside Curling Club plays at the LeFrak Center at Lakeside in Prospect Park, and its arrival in the winter of 2014 marked the first time curling had been played in New York City in more than a century. The sport had been popular in New York in the mid-19th century, and the club revived it on the rink at Lakeside, where curling now shares the ice with the park’s skaters.

The club’s season starts in early November and is built around Try Curling classes, multi-week lessons for beginners, clinics and leagues, including rookie leagues that ease new players into competition. Corporate team-building sessions are a big part of the calendar. The first beginner sessions were four-week courses that bundled equipment, shoe grippers and club membership, for curlers aged 21 and up.

The club is also behind the Brooklyn Curling Center project, planned as New York City’s first dedicated curling facility with six sheets of ice, a bar and restaurant, and event space.
