About Lodi Curling Club
Lodi Curling Club: Curling on the Fairgrounds Since 1880
Lodi Curling Club was formally organized on December 14, 1880, though curling in this Columbia County town goes back to the 1860s, when local sawmills turned out wooden curling blocks with metal handles. In the 1880s the club bought 16 cast-iron blocks from James Fyfe of Portage, and in 1892 it became a founding member of the Northwestern Curling Association of America with Portage, Arlington, Cambria and Poynette.
The club’s first icehouse on Portage Street was dedicated in 1922; its roof collapsed under ice and snow in December 1926 and was repaired within three weeks for $275. In 1948-49 members rebuilt on the fairgrounds using a surplus Army mess hall from Truax Field, bought Scottish granite stones and added artificial ice in the 1950s. Curling entered the Lodi High School winter sports program in 1949, and the women’s “Lodi Lauries” formed in 1955. A new two-sheet facility opened in November 2007 on the same Fair Street site.
The season runs from late November to the end of March with nightly leagues during the week. Bonspiels include the Men’s Bonspiel in January, the St. Patrick’s Day Weekend Mixed in March and the High School Alumni Bonspiel in April.
