About Itasca Curling Club
Itasca Curling Club: From Fairground Ice to Four Sheets in Grand Rapids
Itasca Curling Club, run by the Itasca Curling Association, is the home of curling in Grand Rapids, the seat of Itasca County in northern Minnesota. It was founded in 1968 by eight to ten charter members, among them Wally Froemming, Gordy Brumwell and Tony Caucci, who first curled outdoors beneath the county fairground grandstands.
After a fire, the club moved in 1973 to its present site on Hale Lake Pointe. In January 1997 the roof collapsed, and members rebuilt, reopening in 1998 with a modernized four-sheet facility. Leagues have run there without a break since 1999, and the club now counts about 125 active members.
The association’s mission puts an emphasis on youth and skill development for curlers of every age and level. The winter season brings adult leagues, junior programs, learn-to-curl classes, team-building events and club rentals, along with bonspiels such as the 1000 Lakes and the Caddyshack.
