Lower Cape Curling Club: Granite and Broomstacking in Orleans
Lower Cape Curling Club is the curling home of the outer half of Cape Cod, playing on arena ice at Charles Moore Arena in Orleans, Massachusetts. The club was founded in 2018 by Ron Fancy, with help from former U.S. Curling Association president Evelyn Nostrand and instructors from the Cape Cod Curling Club in Falmouth. Fancy initially bought equipment himself; the club’s granite stones were later sponsored by local businesses, whose names appear on the stones.
Its first Learn to Curl session in October 2018 drew more than 40 people, and the club has grown steadily since, pausing only briefly during the 2020 pandemic. By January 2025 it counted 59 members plus eight associates, from Sandwich to North Truro, and opened its winter session with all four sheets in use for the first time.
Ice time comes on Wednesday mornings and Sunday evenings, organized in ten-week league sessions with roughly 20 hours of ice time, and Learn to Curl events bring in new players. League nights end with broomstacking – at Charles Moore usually over home-baked goods rather than rounds of drinks.
