Roanoke Valley Curling Club: Sunday Nights of ‘Chess on Ice’

Roanoke Valley Curling Club has brought curling to the Star City since 2018. The club plays on arena ice at the Berglund Center, Roanoke’s downtown civic arena, taking the ice on Sunday nights during the hockey season. It belongs to the Grand National Curling Club region of USA Curling.

Members like to call the game “chess on ice,” and the club’s Sunday sessions mix newcomers with experienced curlers, from teenagers to players in their 70s. No skating ability is needed, and the club makes a point of the sport’s accessibility regardless of age or fitness. At least two Learn to Curl events each season introduce new players to delivering stones and sweeping. Interest has climbed with each Winter Olympics, from John Shuster’s 2018 gold to Team USA’s silver at Milan-Cortina in 2026, and the club is working to grow its membership enough to build stronger competitive teams.
