Pine Tree Curling Club: Bringing Curling Back to Portland, Maine
Pine Tree Curling Club is Portland’s curling club, founded in 2015 and playing on arena ice at the William B. Troubh Ice Arena in Maine’s largest city. Like many arena clubs, it takes to the ice late in the evening, once the hockey and skating schedule winds down, and members have learned that preparing a sheet for curling is a craft of its own.
The club has grown steadily, with more than 50 members of all ages, genders and abilities, and it owns a fleet of 80 granite stones. League play runs on weekly evenings through the winter, and Learn to Curl events and clinics throughout the year bring in new players, including one large spring session planned for more than 200 participants. Adaptive equipment helps curlers with limited mobility get on the ice.
Pine Tree has set its sights on a dedicated curling facility in greater Portland, with a vision of four sheets of ice and leagues for youth, wheelchair and senior curlers, plus bonspiels that could draw local colleges such as Bowdoin.
