About La Crosse Curling Club
La Crosse Curling Club: A Century of Curling on the Mississippi
La Crosse Curling Club traces its roots to 1914, when Harry Watkins and Arthur Dusty brought the game to this Mississippi River city. The first exhibition was staged at Powell Park in 1916, and a two-sheet rink went up behind the Pearl Button Works in 1917. In 1937 members turned a cattle barn at the Interstate Fairgrounds into a four-sheet curling house, and in 1977 they built a new clubhouse at Oak and Palace streets. Membership peaked around 150 in 1978, and the last matches on Palace Street were played in March 1998.
Today the club curls on arena ice at the Green Island Ice Arena, one of the few arena curling programs in Wisconsin. Members flood and level the ice themselves before events, and the club’s annual bonspiel, “A Weekend on the River,” has drawn around 30 teams, with free admission for spectators and a Learn to Curl session on Sunday.
La Crosse also competes nationally, sending both men’s and women’s teams to the USA Curling Arena National Championships in 2022 and 2023. A school outreach program introduces curling to students across La Crosse County.
