About Pittsburgh Curling Club
Pittsburgh Curling Club: From Hand-Painted Lines to Four Sheets
Pittsburgh Curling Club was founded in 2002 by twelve curlers and spent its first years on rented ice at Robert Morris University’s Island Sports Center, where members had to draw the sheet lines and circles by hand before every game. The club earned 501(c)(3) charitable status in 2007 and grew past 100 members by 2020.
That growth paid off in February 2020, when the club opened its own four-sheet dedicated curling facility on McCoy Road in Stowe Township, just outside Pittsburgh near McKees Rocks. The ice house is kept at around 40 degrees, and introductory classes split newcomers into groups of six to eight per sheet, with about three instructors on each to teach delivery, sweeping and skipping before a short game.
For more than a decade the club was also known for TropiCurl, an open summer bonspiel held around the Fourth of July from 2006 to 2017 that drew curlers from across the United States and Canada. Today league play, Level 1 Intro to Curling classes and learn-to-curl sessions with local sports leagues keep the four sheets busy through the season.
