About Penn State Club Curling
Penn State Club Curling: The Country’s Largest Student Curling Club
Penn State Club Curling was born of the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics, when the U.S. men’s gold inspired students at University Park to form a team that spring. The club started by borrowing three sets of stones and running Learn to Curl events to pay for its own equipment, and by fall 2019 it already had 14 teams and 75 members, making it the largest student curling club in the country.
Home ice is Pegula Ice Arena, the university’s hockey arena. To fit student schedules, the club’s internal league plays a shortened format of five ends and six stones per end with five-player teams. Its first public Learn to Curl event in April 2019 sold out three sessions.
Now an officially recognized club sport, Penn State travels to one or two weekend bonspiels a month from October onward, competes for a spot at the College Curling National Championship, and has been ranked No. 1 nationally. The club also helped launch the Nittany Valley Curling Club for local residents and holds a seat on its board.
