About Anthracite Curling Club
Anthracite Curling Club: Curling in Pennsylvania’s Coal Country
Anthracite Curling Club takes its name from the hard coal that built northeastern Pennsylvania. The club was founded in 2006 as the Scranton Curling Club by Dave Cawley, Matt Lyons and Cawley’s daughter, and a few years later it adopted the Anthracite name to reflect a membership drawn from across the region. Its home is the Toyota SportsPlex on Coal Street in Wilkes-Barre, the former Ice Rink at Coal Street Park, where the club lays out four sheets of curling on arena ice.
League night is Tuesday, with four-player teams playing games of about two hours, and the club also runs a summer league. Members travel to bonspiels along the East Coast, and in July 2012 Anthracite hosted its first bonspiel of its own, the Diamond City Bonspiel, a four-event open competition for mixed teams with a four-game guarantee. The club is a member of the Grand National Curling Club.
Newcomers are a steady part of the club’s life. Anthracite regularly holds open houses and two-hour Learn to Curl sessions at the SportsPlex, teaching delivery, sweeping and basic strategy before finishing with a short practice game, most recently in March 2026 ahead of the summer league. Jason Snyder has served as club president.
