About Potomac Curling Club
Potomac Curling Club: Washington’s Curling Home Since 1961
Potomac Curling Club was founded in 1961 by six Canadian expatriates working in Washington, D.C., and has grown into the largest curling community in the Baltimore–Washington region. Since 2002 the club has played at the National Capital Curling Center in Laurel, Maryland, a four-sheet dedicated curling facility that was the first purpose-built curling club constructed in the United States since 1974. The building includes a warm room, kitchen, locker rooms, bar and pro shop.
Olympic coverage in 2002 and 2006 fueled rapid growth, and membership passed 400 before the pandemic, with more than 200 active league curlers returning when play resumed in fall 2021. The club is run entirely by volunteers, with no paid staff.
Laurel has become a regular stop for national events. Potomac has hosted the 2004 USWCA Senior Women’s Bonspiel, the 2005 USCA Mixed National Championship, 2010 Eastern regional qualifiers for the U.S. Men’s Championship, the 2012 World Rotary Curling Championships and the 2020 USA Curling Club National Championships. Its signature event is the Cherry Blossom Bonspiel, a 32-team open, and a group of members known as the Bay Hoppers travels to the Chesapeake Curling Club for Saturday games in pursuit of an annual trophy.
