Chesapeake Curling Club: Curling on Maryland’s Eastern Shore

Chesapeake Curling Club has kept curling alive on Maryland’s Eastern Shore since 1979. The club plays at the Talbot County Community Center in Easton, where three sheets of curling ice share the building with the county’s skating rink, and for years it billed itself as the southernmost curling club in the United States.

Membership has numbered around 55 to 60 curlers, from players in their twenties to seniors. The weekly schedule has included a men’s league on Wednesdays, a women’s league on Thursdays and mixed leagues on Tuesdays and Fridays, and members travel to compete at regional events in New York and Massachusetts.

The club’s calendar features its own bonspiels, including a January Funspiel and The Miller in February, and Easton hosted the Grand National Curling Club Senior Mixed Bonspiel in 2011. Beginner lessons, themed events, social bonspiels, group sessions and a Junior Curling Program bring new players onto the ice.
