About St. Paul Curling Club
St. Paul Curling Club: America’s Largest Curling Club on Selby Avenue
St. Paul Curling Club is one of the landmarks of American curling. The first incarnation of the club was incorporated on November 16, 1885, and the Twin Cities’ first curling match was played on Christmas Day that year on the frozen Mississippi River. Early rinks were built on Raspberry Island in 1891, and in 1912, after two clubs merged, the club settled into its clubhouse at 470 Selby Avenue, where it still curls today.
The Selby Avenue building holds eight sheets of ice, originally natural ice, with artificial ice added gradually between 1939 and 1947. With more than 1,200 members, it is the largest curling club in the United States. It was the first U.S. club to host every national championship event and hosted the 2011 World Mixed Doubles and World Senior Curling Championships. Its members have included 2003 world champion Allison Pottinger, national champion Rich Ruohonen and Olympians John Benton and Jessica Schultz.
The season runs from October through April, with league play for every level, from the long-running Metro League (formed in 1961) and Mixed League (1962) to competitive divisions and social leagues, along with youth and beginner programs and corporate events.
