About Stephen Curling Club
Stephen Curling Club: Small-Town Curling in Minnesota’s Red River Valley
Stephen Curling Club is the curling home of Stephen, a small farming town in northwestern Minnesota. The club’s three-sheet dedicated rink went up in the 1960s, built with a backup plan: if curling failed to catch on, the building could store grain. It never came to that, and the club has been going strong ever since, with the ice area and upper building renovated in recent years.
Two adult leagues fill the ice each week, with 24 teams between them: the revived Farmers League curls on Wednesday afternoons and another adult league on Thursdays. Youth curling drew some 30 to 40 children to its first sessions, and local high school students curl here as well.
The highlight of the winter is the February bonspiel, which doubles as the town’s unofficial winterfest. After the event was skipped in 2006, it came back stronger, and by 2019 it filled so fast that latecomers were put on a waiting list.
